We all know that there are 365 days a year, but only few people are aware that how many special days are on the list of United Nation Days, which are widely celebrated as World Days. These days occur once a year every year and are celebrated accordingly. However it depends when a day will actually be celebrated on which specific dates in a year. According to Global Observances in 2019, there are ninety plus days on the list of global days, for example World Cancer Day, World Women Day, Happiness Day, Radio Day, Poetry Day, Forest Day, TB Day, Health Day, Dance Day, Independence Day, Parents’ Day, Population Day, Friendship Day, Food Day and so on.

International Days Recognized as World Days by UN?:

Generally there may be more than thousand days which are established, launched and celebrated by large number of people. Like every country has its independence day, many religious days and cultural days too. UN has not recognized all of them for celebration neither established them as world day form its platform. But when we talk about recognized world days by UN then we see that January has lowest no of world days i.e. 01 celebrates as “International outer space day” and October has the maximum world days on its credit i.e. 14 days while March, June, November and December have 10 world days. February has 04, May 06, July and September have 07 each and April has 09 days to be celebrated in its month.

Almost ninety plus topics which have been allocated a specific day to be regularly celebrated to create awareness and get attention of the nations across the world in order to highlight the importance of a topic on that day in different types of activities like seminars, International conferences, campaigns, press conferences, TV and radio programs and concerts etc., are held to allow the general public to know about the information about a specific topic on that day to contribute at their level throughout the year. Since September has started this year we had Literacy Day on 8th, Suicide prevention day on 10th, Day of democracy on 15th, Patient Safety Day on 17th, Day of peace on 21st and Tourism Day, Rabies Day and Heart day to be celebrated on 27th, 28th and 29th September respectively.

Contraception & Support of International Partners:

World Contraception Day (September 26) is not on the list of UN World Day. Many countries and organizations celebrate it to increase the level of awareness among contraceptive users about their expanded choice of method mix of contraception. World Contraception Day-WCD was launched for the first time in 2007 and now around 15 international partners who are member of World Contraception Day Coalition. These include Asia Pacific Council on Contraception (APCOC), Centro Latinamericano Salud y Mujer (CELSAM), DSW (Deutsche Stiftung Weltbevoelkerung), EngenderHealth (EH), European Society of Contraception and Reproductive Health (ESC), Family Planning 2020 (FP2020), International Federation of Pediatric and Adolescent Gynecology (FIGIJ), International Planned Parenthood Federation (IPPF), Marie Stopes International (MSI), Pathfinder International, Population Services International (PSI), Population Council, The United States Agency for International Development (USAID), United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), Women Deliver (WD) and Bayer AG. Role of Pharmacovigilance in Patient Safety:

In order to ensure patient safety, more emphasis is needed on medication safety. Whenever a user experience any side effect after using any contraceptive method or product, he/she should report it to their counselor, physician or prescriber. This practice is an essential step to ensure drug safety. Drug safety is taken as Pharmacovigilance by Pharmaceutical industry, it is a scientific subject and recognized as branch of medical science. Usually every drug/medicine only comes in market after a comprehensive research and meeting the required standards of quality. FDA and other such authorities approve any drug and get registered followed by Marketing. There can be a great difference in any body’s biological reaction to any medicinal product. In modern contraceptive methods whether it be an implant, IUS system (congaing hormone), Injectables or pills are considered as medicinal products. Sometimes it is not possible to know about each and every side effect of a medicinal product during its clinical development and comprehensive research clinical trials. This is why Pharmacovigilance or for a common man or women drug safety subject has been emerged. Both end-user and physician should know about drug safety and take responsibility to report it. Only reporting can save human life from unbearable incidents and sentinel events like death. All health awareness activity should include pharmacovigilance (Drug safety) so that we can achieve a healthy and safe drug environment not only in Pakistan but in the region too.

Role of Healthcare Physicians:

On WCD, healthcare physicians can play their roles by creating awareness on what is contraception and what are the methods and products and which could be the best choice for them according to their age and health condition keeping other factors in mind like socioeconomic situation. They should encourage their clients and audience to allow them to reach them or contact them for their feedback on its usage whether negative or positive. Drug safety or Pharmacovigilance rotates around collection, detection, assessment, monitoring and prevention from adverse reaction (ADR) from any pharmaceutical product. Only completion of this cycle (Feedback of a client by a client actively and voluntary) and complete information of contraception through above mentioned awareness related steps can meet our Sustainable Development Goal for ensuring good health and well being.
